Bend Oregon Snow

Below zero in Bend OregonI've lived in Bend, Oregon for a very long time now. I've been around long enough to see it get below zero many times. It always makes laugh too. People are always so shocked how cold it is. Which, it really isn't that cold... due to the sun we get with it.

The only time I consider our weather here in Central Oregon to be unbearable is when the wind is blowing with these cold temperatures. Then you are talking about the difference between maybe -8 degrees with no wind, and maybe -20 degrees. At least feels like that much of a gap.

The first Photograph in this post, was taken a few years ago. It is off of Highway 20, on the East side of Bend. The air was cold enough to freeze what little moisture resides in your nasal passage as you inhaled that night. You could feel a sharp, crisp, and almost refreshing tingle in your throat.

Central-Oregon-SnowThis next photo is from my mother's drive way. Also taken a few years ago, on the same night as the other. These are some Central Oregon Juniper Bushes, that lined her driveway at the time. These bushes probably stood about four feet tall, six in their longest areas. With this snow fall, they were weighed down to about two and half feet.

When it gets into the lower temps like this, the snow loses a lot of its moisture qualities. It becomes dry, and crumbly. If you look at the photograph closely, you can see sparkles. This is very common when the snow reaches this consistency. It almost seems unreal.

I love Bend for all the seasons. The winter especially. The "snowbirds" (people who like the cold and winter activities Central Oregon has to offer) are always fun to hang out with this time of year. Mt. Bachelor always draws world famous skiers and snowboarders to Bend. It also produces them... With epic Bachelor runs like Old Skyliner, Red Chair (also a Deschutes Brewery IPA), Outback Express, Downunder West, West Village Getback and dozens more!

Road Trip: Along Oregon's McKenzie Hwy

The McKenzie River

McKenzie River OregonOk, I know this blog is called Bend Oregon Photos. But, from time to time, as I travel... you'll probably see some photos from other places around Oregon. Plus it's my blog... I'll do what I want! ;)

This shot comes from along the McKenzie Highway. I was on the way to an Oregon Ducks (Go Ducks!) game this last weekend. I wanted to get out of the car and stretch my legs, so I pulled in to this little day park off the highway. There was a trail that led down away from the park, and I followed it.

The air was wet and fresh. It smelled great. The ground was covered in large, yellow, wet leaves. The McKenzie river babbled on in the distance.

It was such a great time of year to be there. No else in sight. The air was cool, and crisp. It felt clean as you inhaled. Almost energizing.

I loved the walk down to the river. The leaves soaked my shoes, but that didn't matter. Fallen trees covered areas of the path. Moss grew wildly across everything two feet off the ground and up. As I came to a clearing by the water, there were large stones all around the water. I was able to build a make shift bridge, by lining up these large stones in the water, all the way out a large rock. Once I got out there, I was able to just sit there for a while and take it all in.

Mixed Feelings About Bend Video

VisitBend.com's Promo Video

I love Bend, Oregon. Let's just get that straight right off the bat. I grew up here.

It is annoying however, to watch your town start to deteriorate slowly as the population grows. Crime increases. A 10 minute drive becomes a 20 minute drive, due to traffic. Big chain stores move in and wipe out local businesses that have been here for years. Property prices blow through the roof, and make home ownership an impossibility.

The video is right though, Bend, Oregon is probably one of the greatest places to live in the Western United States. Bend is big enough to have all you need. The natural beauty is truly breath taking. So, while I love Bend... I hate to see it advertised.

The Bend Bulletin's Well Shot Photo Contest

SLR Digital Camera
Bend Oregon Photography!

I was pleasantly surprised to come across a recent issue of the Bend Bulletin's Local section. It appears they are running a "Well Shot!" photo contest. The issue of the paper with the winning photos is published every Tuesday, in the Local section of the paper. It would appear that shots are published a week after professional photographers offer their advice. You can also find more details on the photo contest at http://bendbulletin.mycapture.com/wellshoot.

There is some great local photographic talent in the Bend community and The Bulletin showcases it nicely! In Tuesday's issue, the theme was portraits. There were some amazing entries this week! Including one from a blog I currently subscribe to: Juniper Seahorses, written by Jacqueline Smith. Her photo was of a man named Larry. If you get the chance, stop by her blog and look at some of her stunning photography.

In the month of November there will be a "The Dark" theme followed by a "Wildlife" theme. This month's theme is "Water," and in December two more themes. If you get a chance, enter the contest! If you'd like, let me know and I may up for publishing some local photography here on this blog!

Shooting East of Bend, Oregon

Bend Oregon Photography

This Saturday I headed out east of Bend, Oregon shooting... and I don't mean with my camera (well, I guess with that too). I mean with riffles and a shot gun. Guns for the day were a shot gun, a 30-06, a .22 cal, along with some clay pigeons and paper targets.

The spot was on the old highway, about two and half miles off the main highway (E. Highway20). This spot is about 15 - 20 miles east of Bend's city limits. It's near the Horse Ridge National Area. There is a lot of neat canyons to explore, hike and tour in this area. What is nice about the Horse Ridge and BadLands area, is that it is still pretty close to Bend and city amenities.

The whole area is also known as the Central Oregon badlands. Further east is Millican Oregon, which is a podunk little town. The community was named for George Millican, a settler. The latitude of Millican is 43.879N, the longitude is -120.918W. Millican is well known amongst dirt bike riders and ATVers.

Below are the photos of this area:

Meadow Lakes Golf Course

Bend Oregon Photos - Golf Courses of Central Oregon

Bend Oregon Photos takes a field trip! Today I went golfing with some friends. We were looking for some cheap golf, so we headed out east of Bend, Oregon. In Prineville, there is a course called Meadow Lakes. It's not the most glamorous course in Central Oregon by any means, but for what it is... it's a pretty good value.

Meadow Lakes Green in Prineville Oregon
The photo above is of a green. I suppose I'd be a much better photo journalist if I kept track of the details, but I don't... so, I can't tell you which hole this photo is of. If you look in the image, off to the left you can see a blue flag pin waving in the wind.

Oh... the wind. Did I mention the wind yet? It was a cold day here in the high desert, which is pretty typical of Bend, Oregon and it's surrounding areas. Especially this time of year. The weather today on the course was pretty much just that (cold). We had cloud cover close to the whole time, with an arctic wind that just wouldn't stop. The clouds broke here and there, providing us with some warm sun, which was nice. It was short lived however, and those very same clouds returned with some nice central Oregon hail for us.

Meadow Lakes Golf Course
In this picture (photo above) you can see the wind blowing the tree limbs everywhere. This picture is taken right at the tee box, which one of the white markers can be seen in the left area of the photo. Harder to see, is a water hazard off to the right of tee box (look for the weed like willows at the edge of the grass). I liked this hole and wanted to get a shot of the trees here.

Golf Carts at Meadow Lakes
Wrapping up our day, we returned our carts to club house. As I pulled off my sunglasses, I could see light reflecting off the hoods of golf carts all lined up in the shed. I pulled out the old digital camera and took a shot. Well, apparently my camera has better light perception than I do. What looked very cool and photogenic to me, didn't translate so well in the above image. I decided I'd include it anyway.

    Photo Hit List

I apologize about the lack of posting. I have some new spots to add to the Bend Oregon Photos hit list. I've made sort of a mental note, as I've been doing my daily travels throughout Bend this last week. Here they are, in no particular order:
    • Photographs of the Old Mill District.
    • Photographs of Hwy 97
    • Photographs of the Bend Oktoberfest
These are a few I'd like to add to the site. I think with fall approaching, there will be some good shots of fall colors to come. Stay tuned Central Oregon (and beyond)!

    The Little Woody Festival Photos!

Bend Oregon Photos - Awesome Craft Beer

Aside from the annoying droves of downtown hippies and flat billed skater hat kids, The Little Woody Barrel-Aged Brew Festival was amazing. The beers were simply art. Tasty, smooth, and priced well (I had to think about that last one... and it's true). The weather was amazingly warm and sunny.

Little Woody Festival in Bend Oregon The photo above is of The Little Woody pint glass and some wooden tokens (used to buy the beer). Each pour was roughly, just under a half glass. Tokens were $1 each, and the beers were 1 or 2 tokens. So a half glass of beer worked out to $1.00 or $2.00. Considering the beer was barrel aged and hand crafted... I don't think that is asking too much. The pint glass and entry fee into the event was a total of $6.00.

I have to give my personal award of the day to Silvermoon Brewing's Bourbon Bite Porter (not positive this is the exact name... but I am confident it is pretty close). It was the most taste bud arousing, full bodied goodness I put in my mouth at the event. There were a few close others, but this one took the cake.

Lawn Gnomes at the Little Woody Festival The gnomes above gave me a quick chuckle. They were part of the fun and festivities that came along with a raffle ticket purchase for the Breedlove Guitar. Aside from the beer & food, there was a band, wood carving, fun games, and admittance into the Deschutes Historical Museum.

I suppose most photographers and photojournalists would have taken many shots of happy people, beer in hand, gathered around the tents chatting it up. That or possibly, artsy shots of fine craft beer in the pint glass, among the barrels of aged beer. I chose not to do this. I'm not a big fan of crowds and the like. So you get an empty pint glass, the asses of gnomes, and a shot of the free Three Creeks Brewing Co. (Sisters, Oregon) sticker I received. I hope you all enjoyed these photos as much as I did taking them.

Bend Oregon - Barrel Aged Brew Festival

Bend Oregon Photos - The Little Woody

    Little Woody Beer Fest Flyer
On Saturday September 12 (today, as of this post), in Bend Oregon, there is going to be a barrel-aged brew festival! It will be on the lawn of the Deschutes Historical Museum, in downtown Bend on the corner of Wall and Idaho. Another easy way of saying this is that it is just a few blocks from the Bend library.

The event runs from 12PM - 10PM, and is for those that are 21 and over. This event will have food, beer tasting, live music, and even a wood carving exhibition. Admission to The Little Woody festival includes a commemorative glass. The Deschutes Historical Society will also receive a portion of the benefits from the event.

    Featured Breweries:
    • Deschutes Brewery
    • Cascade Lakes Brewing
    • Bend Brewing Company
    • Silver Moon Brewing
    • 10 Barrel Brewing
    • McMenamins
    • Three Creeks Brewing

I am not yet sure I will be attending this event, but have wanted to. I am not completely reliable when it comes to committing to weekend events. We'll have to see what the day brings tomorrow. If I do go, I will post some photos from the event.

Bend Oregon Photos - Mt. Washington Dr.

Bend Oregon Photos - Bend in September

Ah, September in Central Oregon... the air crispens to a nice cool temp, the tourists start to depart back to their homesteads and off of our local roadways, and the skater children go back to school... flat billed hats, long unruly hair, and all. Really, it's a nice time of year. Still sunny, but things start to slow a little. It's a pace I like.
The photograph above is taken from a spot off of Mt. Washington drive. There are some trails here and pretty neat views. The foot traffic is light, and I think it's one Bend Oregon's lesser known spots. This shot is of the trail.

In this picture (above), you can see Bend from a bird's eye view. Notice the Old Mill smokes stack, dwarfed, off in the distance? You can see more of the West side from this spot.

This photograph is from a few feet down the trail. It's still off to the same side as the last. From here you can spot Pilot Butte rising up from Bend's landscape.

    More Photos:

These next two (below), were shots from the same spot I was at. I kind of liked the landscape and tried to capture some interesting shots from different angles. The first was of a large rock laying in the sage. The second, some yellow wildflowers (or weeds) in front of a large stone. The darkness of the stone worked well to accent the yellow on the buds of the plant.

    Bend Oregon Photos

Bend Oregon Photos - Brooks Park

Brooks Park in Down Town Bend Oregon
In Bend Oregon there is this little park off of Newport avenue (HWY 20), called Brooks Park. It is right off the bridge, and down the street from the old Elks Lodge (now Boondocks). It's a quaint little place and has some picnic tables. It's decent little place for family gatherings and such. It boarders a neat little neighborhood on NW Drake Road.

House for sale on Bend's West SideThe strange part about these Bend photos is that I did not actually take a picture of the park. I know... don't ask me why. Some photographer huh? This photo is in that neighborhood on NW Drake Road. It is a house on the corner there that was for sale. I thought the house was pretty cool, so I snapped a shot of it. I liked the mossy tree and landscape of the front yard. I also thought house was really neat as well.

Bend Oregon HouseI tried different angles on these shots, and played around with framing shots. It is probably going to take a while and some self instruction, until my photos start to look professional... but the adage says: "If at first you don't succeed; try, try again." That is kind of the plan for this blog. Snap the shot, evaluate it, and adjust. Eventually, it will be second nature (hopefully!). I hope enjoyed these shots.

    Bend Oregon - Cooley Road.

Bend Oregon Photos - Cooley Road photos

    Cooley Road in Bend Oregon

The photo above is taken of Cooley road, which is just Northwest of Bend Oregon's city limits. This is where the Welcome to Bend Oregon sign is, that adorns the population count. As you come into town from Sisters and Tumalo, you'll pass Cooley Road and welcome sign.

Old barn on CooleyIf you were to turn right on Cooley Road, you'd pass this old boarded up farm house. It's off to the right hand side of Cooley, almost immediately after you turn onto the street. The house is abandoned (possibly foreclosed...) and I though it'd be an interesting landscape style of photo to take. The trees helped to add some character to the photograph, or so I thought.

Old Paved Cooley RoadThe camera didn't quite capture the mountain that appears to be at the end of Cooley Road, the way I had hoped it would. Now, there really isn't a mountain at the end of Cooley, but standing where I was, it was sort of an optical illusion that appeared to be so. Standing in middle of road on Cooley, the asphalt appears to run on into eternity. I had hoped to capture that feeling here, but the image just didn't quite get there.

Bend Oregon Photos - Bend Population

    Bend Oregon's Population

Bend Oregon Population SignThis is the Welcoming sign to Bend Oregon as you come in to town from Sisters & Tumalo on Highway 20. According to the sign that stands today (August 25, 2009), Bend's population is 80,995. This sign is just off Cooley road, and the mall lies just off to the South East of here.

I have been wanting some photos of this sign for a while now. I think it just fits this blog and this shot will probably find it's way to the header once I have a few more to incorporate along with it. Upon taking photos of this sign and along Cooley, I realized how bad I need to upgrade my digital camera and acquire a tripod. My photography is just not coming out as nice as I would like. This will have to do for the time being.

    Bend Oregon - Pilot Butte

    Bend Oregon Photos- Pilot Butte

Ah, Pilot Butte.... or "The Butte," as we locals like to call it. "I walked the Butte today." "Guess who I saw up on the Butte?" Pilot Butte is an old cinder cone in Bend Oregon, that has now been turned into a state park (although the website http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_42.php claims the Butte is east of Bend, it is actually just on the east side of Bend...within city limits). There are two trail routes up to the top, which equates to a 2-mile walk (round trip). Once you reach the summit (which offers a rather stunning view of Bend and Central Oregon), there is mountain view finder that will help you find any of the Cascades. It's rewarding workout for all.
    Pilot Butte in Bend Oregon
The Photo above is an information board at the base of Pilot Butte. It tells about the history of Pilot Butte, and some of the Bend area.

Pilot Butte Trail HeadThis photo is taken of the left fork or the paved route. By following this you actually walk away, sort of, then hairpin back to road. This will keep you on the paved portion of the road to the top, rather than the dirt trail.

Summit of Pilot Butte in Bend Oregon
I took the above photo at the summit of Pilot Butte. Up there, you'll find great views of the surrounding city and mountains. This is a compass and points off to each mountain. It gives the name and some general info.
Pilot Butte PictureThis image is on the decent. Rounding the first corner as you leave the viewing area, you met by a spiraling downward road. I thought this old snag was kind of interesting, so I snapped a picture of it.
15th Street in Bend OregonAs you round the old snag and walk down a couple feet, if you turn to your left, you can see all the way down 15th Street. It looks off to the South East. You can see by this photo it's kind of a smokey August summer.
    Highway 20 from Pilot Butte
This is kind of the stock photo everyone takes from Pilot Butte. You'll see all kinds of Bend Oregon posters and websites that are of this very image. It looks up Highway 20, to the west.

Cascade Middle School in Bend OregonThis photo is of Pilot Butte Middle School's track. It kind of stick outs against a lot of the Central Oregon landscape. This is just off Neff Road, and one of several middle schools in Bend.Bend Oregon Wild Flowers

A view down the side of Pilot Butte. You can see the yellow wildflowers (or weeds?) sprouting out of the hill side. Also seen here are natural wooden reinforcements, holding the loose cinder hillside from sliding.Highway 20 East in BendMy final shot is of Highway 20 Eastward. You can see Smolich Motors, and Hertz in this photo. Follow this Highway East and you'll head toward Prineville, Burns, and Idaho.

Bend Oregon Photos - Out of Business

Bend Oregon: Not all rainbows and butterflies...

    Old building in Bend Oregon
Contrary to what all the Realtors and tourism businesses in Bend Oregon will tell you... Bend is not all that beautiful. In fact, there are a lot of ugly, run down, and poverty stricken places here. Although, I doubt you are going to find this information on most of the websites you visit.

I was out and about town today, and decided to snap a few pictures of the ugly side of Bend Oregon. Surprisingly, for a tourist town (and a town full of extreme wealth), there are quite a bit of unsightly areas. After all, I feel that since there are two sides to this coin, readers of this blog deserve not to be duped.

These photos are all taken with in probably a quarter of a mile of each other. It's on Bend's Northwest end, off of Revere. There is a homeless shelter over here, sadly, I don't think it's a coincidence. On this side of town you will find a lot of off/on ramps are to the parkway, railroad tracks, and bridges pass over here as well.

This is an area of places that have gone out of business. Seemingly, one after another. I decided to document this on Bend Oregon Photos.

Below are some photos of Bend Oregon's north side:

Revere Street in Bend Oregon These are photos of an old Chinese restaurant in Bend, called the Shanghai Garden. It was a well known place for years, but now is out of business. An empty building and for lease signs are now all that remain of this once busy restaurant...Shanghai Restaurant in Bend Oregon Old Shanghai in Bend Shanghai This building was (for a long time) a local pool, spa, and stove place. I remember going here once or twice as a kid with my parents. A large pool was out front with a fountain and an over-sized kid's play floaty could often be seen covering the sidewalk most summers. Now... an empty building and lot.

Bend Oregon Photos - Lava Lands & South Bend

Lava Cave National Forest Sign If you were to take a drive five to 10 minutes south of Bend Oregon you find the Central Oregon Lava lands. This is a great place to climb cinder buttes of old dried lava and explore caves! Yes.... lava caves. As you can see from the picture I posted to left, it is in the Deschutes National Forest. There you can also find a visitor's center and a lot of information about the area's history. A few miles North of the lava caves you can find the High Desert Museum, which is also a great source for information on Central Oregon's history and geology as well.

The other photograph is an image I took inside the Lava Lands, to left of the visitor's center. Highway 97 is the highway you use to access the Lava Lands and this sign shows visitors how to get back to the road. You can see there is access to the Deschutes River and Benham falls as well.

    Bend Oregon Photos - Lightning

I am kicking myself at the moment. I didn't have my digital camera ready last night. Last night Bend Oregon put on one of biggest lightning shows its ever had in the past 25 years or so. In fact, the last two nights displayed some of the most beautifully colored sun sets and fascinating lightning shows! Most of last night's bolts were striking on my side of town too! In fact, at one point, one came down probably no more than 250 yards away from me. It was a little unsettling, but very very cool. My goal now is to get the camera ready (just low on batteries at the moment), and get some pictures going on here on Bend Oregon Photos!

    Welcome to Bend Oregon Photos!

    Welcome to Bend Oregon Photos!

Hello and welcome to Bend Oregon Photos. Bend Oregon photos is a blog that consists of nonprofessional photos taken by an amateur photographer (me). This blog will start off with a very basic, point and click digital camera. The photos you will find here are original, and mainly will consist of the blog author's work.

I am a Bend Oregon native. I have seen this town explode in population, which has both resulted in beauty and, conversely, ugliness in its own right. I will try and incorporate both aspects in the images that I capture and that I post here.

You can expect to find many landscapes, of Bend's natural beauty. Undoubtedly, you will probably find many photos of local events and traditions as this blog progresses. Bend Oregon Photos will act as both a tool for me to gain more experience with photography, and at the same, hopefully a glimpse for everyone into the many intricacies of Bend Oregon and its surrounding areas.

These are my works. This my practice. Please enjoy.
